Interest in employing a private fitness coach is rising in some countries, while the demand for sports and group classes is falling. This essay will focus on the reasons for this behavioral shift and argue that evaluating this trend is highly complex.
A higher level of health consciousness may be one reason for this shift. Wealthier countries invest heavily in healthcare and preventive measures, which increase health awareness, resulting in more individuals spending money on personal training, which may provide more effective self-care compared to group classes where a trainer’s attention is divided among many. Cultural values might also play a role, as some nations view achieving a lean or muscular body as an important value. In such countries, there may be a stronger tendency to move away from group sports classes, which may seem less efficient and slower than personalized fitness lessons.
This rising trend might be, on the one hand, significantly positive. As more people witness their friends and colleagues benefiting from personal trainers' services, they may join the trend, creating an effect akin to wildfire in the jungle and leading to higher public health rates. Equally significant is the negative impact of this trend. A shift towards less collectivism and more individualism should raise alarms, as such societies show signs of losing cohesion. People are meeting each other less frequently on a football field or in a yoga class, developing an ‘I and me’ mindset instead of an ‘us and we’ attitude.
These discussions suggest that socioeconomic and cultural factors may shed light on the rising number of individuals employing private fitness coaches in various countries. This trend can enhance public health rates; however, its impact on social cohesion is concerning. Therefore, assessing whether this development is beneficial or detrimental may depend on how authorities address its dark side.
