Some people think increasing the cost of fuel is the best way to solve global environmental problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Several ways have been proposed to tackle global ecological problems. Some believe that among all ideas, increasing the price of fuel is the best, which seems valid only to some extent.

The proposal can reduce CO2 emissions faster than any other plan. Globally, most people belong to the middle class, a more price-sensitive socioeconomic group, and a slight change in prices is likely to prompt these people to quickly adapt to higher prices, resulting in a sudden reduction in private car usage and a rapid decline in the global carbon footprint. More importantly, the cost of implementing this proposal is approximately zero for governments. Any other plan would likely require investing billions of dollars in infrastructure, such as electric cars, buses, and metros, whose benefits can only be expected in the long run.

However, focusing solely on one factor—price—to address a global issue is short-sighted. For this price policy to succeed, there must already be infrastructure in place, such as a modernized public transportation system, to compensate for the reduction in private car usage; otherwise, people will eventually find ways to afford more expensive gas to continue using their cars. Even more concerning is that this proposal could have catastrophic secondary impacts. In the absence of green energies, gas prices are directly linked to the transportation of foodstuffs and raw materials, so any increase in fuel prices can cause a ripple effect, driving up costs across the board.

Overall, the pricing policy aimed at addressing global environmental problems can exacerbate the issue, despite its seemingly positive effect on reducing CO2 emissions at a low cost. What governments should do is devise a more inclusive plan that involves fuel price adjustments, modernized public transportation systems, and a transition toward green energies to tackle global environmental challenges.
