Throughout history, people have dreamed of living in a perfect society, but nobody has agreed on what an ideal society would look like.
What do you think is the most important element needed to make a society perfect?
How can the ideal society be achieved?
Much has been said about the dream of a perfect society, but there is little consensus on what such a society should look like. Before proposing any blueprint for an ideal world, I believe we must identify the single element that underpins all the others.
The most essential element for a perfect world is trust. A large part of the human brain remains reptilian and mammalian, built to detect threats in the environment. This internal threat detector once kept us alive in the wilderness, but today it often perceives ordinary people — colleagues, strangers, neighbors — as if they are predators. When the brain becomes maladaptive, nothing else truly functions. You cannot cultivate love, compassion, gratitude, or any higher virtue on a nervous system constantly ready for danger. Until fear loosens its grip, trust cannot develop, and without trust, no society can be perfect.
Achieving such a society requires us to confront the deeper source of this fear: ignorance about our own consciousness. We know something about the body and a little about the mind, but almost nothing about the nature of consciousness itself. This gap matters because people who genuinely understand consciousness — the so-called enlightened saints — consistently describe a truly happy life in complete peace, beyond constant reactivity. Their lives look drastically different from those of millions who identify only with the body and mind and remain trapped in cycles of constant defense and offense. If the hard problem of consciousness were even partially understood, we might uncover why fear dominates human behavior and how to transcend it.
These reflections suggest that a perfect society cannot be built if fear remains the silent undercurrent guiding all our decisions. Therefore, instead of concentrating solely on the material aspects of life, we should focus on the inner layer — our consciousness — to see if insight into our true nature can loosen fear's grip and foster trust, thereby enabling the creation of a perfect world.
