A lot has been said about what the primary purpose of education should be. While some people think that education exists to benefit society, others believe the reason for its existence is to help individuals achieve their own goals. I believe this either/or view of the issue is false.
On the one hand, without educated people, society would fail to function effectively. People equipped with the knowledge and skills required in essential fields such as medicine, engineering, and teaching enable societies to survive and prosper. Another important point is that education promotes social stability. It helps students become responsible citizens by teaching cooperation, critical thinking, and respect for others, leading to informed decisions and positive contributions to their communities.
On the other hand, personal ambition is often the driving force behind innovation. Many important technological and scientific advances have been made by people pursuing their own dreams rather than simply responding to society's expectations. Elon Musk, for example, is a skilled entrepreneur whose personal ambitions have contributed significantly to advances in space technology and electric vehicles. Moreover, personal ambition fuels motivation. If education focuses exclusively on society's needs without giving sufficient attention to individual aspirations, many people may lose the motivation to develop their full potential.
The discussion above demonstrates that education cannot effectively serve society unless it also nurtures personal ambition. Therefore, the primary purpose of education should be to help individuals pursue their ambitions, not because society is unimportant, but because society can only flourish when individuals are free to develop their talents and pursue meaningful goals.
