Learning about historical events is valuable, but how people learn about them can be divisive, with some preferring video content over written records. I believe this preference is somewhat short-sighted despite its advantages.

One reason this tendency makes sense is that videos have a greater impact on memory. Watching how people struggled with events like World War I and II evokes empathy, which helps embed the scenes in long-term memory, unlike decoding words on a page, which requires a lot of mental effort to picture the brutality of the Nazis. We should also consider modern preferences. Today, many people are less willing to read documents, especially on dull topics like history, due to the influence of social media. Instead, they can learn more about the Trojans by watching the movie Troy, which features frequent cuts and short scenes that fit their short attention spans.

However, learning about past events through visuals might not always be reliable. Movies and documentaries use various tactics, such as adding twists, comedy, and sex scenes, to keep viewers interested—for example, in stories like Spartacus and his revolution—whereas written documents tend to be more sensitive to maintaining historical accuracy. There is also the issue of preserving nuance. Movie directors focus on entertainment and delivering information through a straightforward plot, often simplifying or omitting important historical details—an approach that is usually avoided in reputable history books, where scholars provide in-depth analysis of events.

These discussions suggest that learning about important historical events through video clips without the use of written documents might be a huge oversight. Visual content may be better remembered or align with modern people’s learning style, but it often lacks reliability, rigor, and detail. Therefore, I believe that the claim regarding the learning style discussed so far can only be valid to some extent due to its utter disregard for written documents.
