The use of mobile phones in public places has brought both convenience and disruption. While some people emphasize their negative impact and argue that mobile phones should be banned in all public spaces, such as libraries, shops, and public transport, I believe that, despite some merit, this proposal should be rejected due to its rigidity.
Mobile phone use in public settings can clearly disturb others. Loud conversations contribute to noise pollution, particularly in places designed for quiet, such as libraries, where silence is essential for concentration. Similarly, in sensitive environments like hospitals, irresponsible phone use may distract medical staff or distress patients. These concerns explain why restrictions on phone use are often proposed in specific contexts.
However, imposing a blanket ban on mobile phones in all public places raises serious problems. Such a policy would treat all users identically, regardless of purpose or behavior. Many people rely on their phones for emergencies, navigation, or essential communication, and a one-size-fits-all rule would unfairly penalize responsible users alongside inconsiderate ones. This lack of proportionality risks creating a sense of injustice rather than encouraging respectful behavior. In addition, the feasibility of enforcing such a ban is questionable. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones, monitoring and policing their use in every public space would be impractical and resource-intensive.
These considerations suggest that although banning mobile phones might reduce noise and disruption in some settings, a total prohibition is neither fair nor realistic. A more effective approach would involve targeted restrictions and clearer social norms that address misuse without denying the practical benefits of mobile technology.
