Garbage management is not a modern concept, but its significance is more critical today due to the unprecedented amount of waste we are producing. This crisis can be understood by examining the combined influence of several factors, and governments can implement various measures to address it.
This crisis may stem from the combined effects of overpopulation and economic growth. Over the past five decades, the world's population has grown from a few billion to around eight billion. In correlation, the number of manufacturers has increased dramatically to meet the rising demand. These changes have led to a significant number of products made from plastics and metals, which are purchased, used, and discarded by more consumers than at any other time in human history, resulting in a surge in garbage production.
To mitigate this catastrophe, governments should begin with manufacturers. Through new legislation, such as a green tax, they should persuade profit-sensitive producers to reconsider their excessive use of non-biodegradable materials in their production and packaging strategies, thereby reducing the amount of waste that is thrown out or sent to landfills. However, governments should also involve consumers in the equation. The public needs to develop new habits related to proper waste management, which requires national and local authorities to create awareness campaigns and infrastructure for recycling programs. Any lack of accessibility to essential facilities or training programs can hinder the necessary societal change needed to tackle the issue.
These discussions suggest that since the root causes of the garbage crisis stem from global changes in population growth and economic development, if governments do not coordinate their efforts to mitigate the effects of this issue, a more severe crisis will await us all. Therefore, they should focus on the underlying causes of this crisis: the laws governing production and the attitudes of consumers.
