Finding the right balance between green spaces and housing needs is difficult. Some argue that priority should be given to developing green areas in urban centers of varying sizes rather than building more housing. I think this point makes sense, but only to a certain extent.
Planting trees enhances human well-being. In cities filled with smoke, concrete, and noise, green spaces serve as our psychological anchors, helping us reduce anxiety and stress while providing opportunities to connect with nature through walking, jogging, or running to boost our physical health. Additionally, trees address multiple environmental issues by absorbing CO2 and filtering air, thereby reducing pollution and improving air quality. Their presence throughout cities can also decrease the urban heat island effect, making urban areas more comfortable and livable.
However, expanding green spaces can lead to affordability issues. Many cities, especially large urban centers, may not have enough homes, and ignoring this problem can limit housing supply and increase demand, leading to a sharp rise in property values and rents that can be disastrous for low- and middle-income households. Another concern is that focusing on trees can cause further environmental damage. Due to housing shortages, development on the outskirts of cities and in rural areas might accelerate, causing further harm to farmland, forests, and lakes around urban centers.
These discussions suggest that widespread adoption of planting trees in all urban areas could improve public health and address several environmental issues in some cities and towns. However, in other places, it may lead to a housing crisis and additional environmental problems. Therefore, I believe the final decision should depend on the specific needs of each city.
